The key to getting a custom look from off-the-shelf area rugs is to combine several together, giving the appearance of a large, custom-sized version. While this project is easy to do, success depends on selecting the right materials - not just any area rug will work. Solids are easy to use; depending on the rug’s material, however, seams may appear prominent and detract from the intended illusion of one large solid piece. Textural rugs such as shag are often the best choice since the loose fibers of the shag hide the seams between each rug. Rugs with large-scale patterns make the most visual impact, especially since introducing a pattern into a cramped space can take focus off the lack of square footage and attract it to the bold pattern.
In order to successfully blend multiple area rugs with bold patterns, there are important details to keep in mind. First, be aware of where a rug’s pattern repeat begins and ends. Lay several of the same style rugs out flat on the ground. If the repeat starts and ends in the same portion of each rug, this means they will match up seamlessly once strung together. On the other hand, if the pattern repeat is inconsistent among several of the same rugs, it’s best not to use it. A few styles that are usually simple to match up include: plaid, stripes, zigzags and large-scale botanicals.
As their name implies, contemporary rugs are rugs that boast modern, contemporary styles. Bright, vivid colors and sharp geometric shapes tend to be among the most popular contemporary rug styles. These rugs brighten up any room and work well with a number of different types of interior design schemes. Indeed, these types of rugs aren’t just suitable for contemporary interior design schemes - they work well with many different styles.
The black wool rug works best for high traffic areas like the living room, as wool is a great natural material that is tough and hard-wearing, yet remains very soft and comfortable for the feet. Wool is also a natural fiber which means that it is safer than synthetic materials. Did you know that wool is naturally flame resistant? This makes it a great rug to be placed in living rooms with fireplaces. A small errant spark that may accidentally land on your wool rug will burn itself out.
There’s good reason area rugs should carpet a room. They’re practical, providing cushion, comfort and warmth over a concrete, tile or wood floor. But they also provide artistic value to a room’s design. Considered artwork for the floor, which acts as the frame, size does matter — and it’s often a big concern for the homeowner unsure of how to create that well-balanced space.
If you are going to make an investment in a wool area rug, you should certainly take the time to admire all of the hard-work that was put into its creation; especially if it was a handmade rug. The benefit of buying a handmade wool rug over a regular one is that it will likely be a lot more unique and have much greater durability than most rugs.
